Random Mortared Flagstone

This photo shows an example of a Manitoulin random mortared flagstone patio.  Depending on the situation mortared flagstone is either installed on a 3-4" layer of concrete with a 1" bed of mortar between the flagstone and the concrete.

Another way of installing mortared flagstone is on a 8" layer of 3/4" clear gravel.  In this case you will need to have a 4" bed of mortar between the clear gravel and the flagstone.  This is only recommended if the property or site has good drainage!

There are many different options for flagstone that can be used!  Some of them include Wiarton Flagstone (most common), others include India Stone and Sandstone.

At this Cottage Style house we installed a White Garden with a rustic Flagstone Walkway and Patio in the backyard.  We also installed a traditional white picket fence that had a Hicks Yew Hedge around the inside perimeter.  In this shady backyard garden we incorporated a Woodland theme, with lots of Ferns, Hosta's, Trilliums, Solomons Seal and of course Rhododendron's.  In the front yard which was more sunny we included some textured plant material like Boxwoods and Yews, that would contrast nicely with our Magnolia, Peonies & Viburnums and other white sun loving perennials.
